Most Classes Online First Two Weeks of Spring Semester

In a move to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 amid a surging new variant, Thomas Nelson (becoming Virginia Peninsula Community College) is switching most of its classes from in-person to virtual for the first two weeks of spring semester – Jan. 10 - 21.  Some in-person classes in career and technical programs, including allied health, and skilled trades courses will continue meeting on campus.

Free Telehealth Service for Students Aimed at Mental Well-Being

Thomas Nelson Community College is excited to offer TimelyCare  – a new telehealth program for students. The service provides 24/7 access to mental virtual health care from anywhere in the United States, with no cost to visit. The service comes as part of ongoing VCCS efforts to prioritize the health and well-being of its campus communities.

Free Financial Aid Workshop Jan. 29 in Hampton, Williamsburg

Super Saturday, a free financial aid workshop for college-bound and returning students, takes place Jan. 29 at Thomas Nelson (becoming Virginia Peninsula Community College). During the 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. event, the College's Financial Aid team will assist attendees in Hampton at Wythe Hall in the computer lab next to the library and at the Historic Triangle campus in Room 233. Representatives from Admissions, Academic Advising, and faculty from each division will also be on hand.

Students create gingerbread houses to spread holiday cheer and raise funds for CHKD

College Signs Lease on Hampton IV Building

The College is renting space at 521 Butler Farm Rd. as temporary housing for those replaced by the Templin Hall renovations. The collapse of a portion of the Templin Hall roof did more than displace the theater department. The nearly 50,000-square foot building also was home to classrooms and offices. Most of the classes once held in Templin are being held across the campus, and many faculty and staff who were displaced also have been scattered among multiple buildings. However, steps have been taken recently to bring all under one roof again.

The Thomas Nelson’s men’s basketball team has 10 games scheduled for the second half of the season. Coach Chris Moore’s goals are to win every one and place first in the New South Athletic Conference. Those goals might seem out of reach until the Gators' performance in first half of the season is taken into account.

Faculty-Staff Innovators Grants Help Range of Programs

Of three Faculty-Staff Innovators grants recently awarded, one went to the drone program.   Recipients of the latest Faculty-Staff Innovators grants from the Thomas Nelson Educational Foundation vary greatly. One involves an academic program, another involves a workforce development program, and the third involves a program that helps students transition to college life. However, what they all have in common is their enduring impact on student success, which is the grant program's goal, said Tracy Ashley, the College's director of development.

Cherry likes to stress the “student” aspect. “The goals that I have set are for the students, my peers,” said Cherry, who prefers to go by her first initial or last name. First and foremost among those goals is making her peers aware the SGA is for them; that if they “have any questions, comments or concerns, whether good, bad or ugly,” the organization is there for them.

Known as the “Amazing Ayisha” by her patients, Ayisha Muhammad is dedicated to caring for elderly and disabled clients as a certified nurse aide through her business, iCare4u, LLC. The 34-year-old mom of two decided to pursue a business degree at Tidewater Community College to expand her knowledge and gain the skills she needs to grow her business. Ayisha chose the college’s Accelerated Degree Program (ADP) to get her degree even faster. She started in Feb. 2021 and will cross the stage at TCC’s 73rd Commencement Exercises less than a year later on Dec.

Basketball Team Facing Ranked Opponents

The Thomas Nelson men’s basketball team is 7-0, and faces two nationally-ranked opponents this weekend, one on the road and one at home. The first game is Saturday, Dec. 18 against Sandhills Community College, which is in Pinehurst, N.C. Sandhills is 14-4 and ranked 10th  in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III poll. The Gators return home the following day to take on Monroe College (Bronx campus) in a 2 p.m. game at Hampton's Bethel High School. Monroe College is 8-2 and ranked two spots behind Sandhills.
