Counselor Recalls Heritage Shooting

Erin Nobile was having a normal day in her role as Thomas Nelson's career coach at Heritage High School when there was a shooting at the school Sept. 20. Erin Nobile, a Student Affairs counselor for Thomas Nelson, has been the career coach at Heritage High School since 2013. Her regular schedule has her at the school, which is in Newport News and nearly seven miles from the College’s Hampton campus, from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.

December Brings the End of REV Program

As a reminder, the Re-Employing Virginia’s (REV) program will end in December, according to VCCS officials. The state initiative was launched in 2020 to help students cover tuition and fees for degree and certificate programs in several high-demand fields.   The program’s funding for degree and transfer students enrolled for fall 2021 must be awarded, disbursed and processed by Dec. 31.

Thanksgiving Break: College Closes at Noon Nov. 24

In observance of Thanksgiving, Thomas Nelson (becoming Virginia Peninsula Community College) will close at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 24.  Campuses in Hampton and Williamsburg as well as satellite locations will reopen Monday, Nov. 29.  During the closure, new and returning students may get information about spring 2022 classes, tuition payment, financial aid and more at tncc.edu. College officials extend best wishes for a safe and enjoyable holiday.

On a weekday morning in mid-October, seven Thomas Nelson students and two professors boarded the College’s research vessel for a trip on the York River. Gators Win First Game on Court Named After Coach's Father

Countless hours playing basketball on the court at Warwick High School, many in the shadow of his father, couldn’t prepare Thomas Nelson men’s coach Chris Moore for this moment. Before a crowd of more than 200 people, including many of his father’s former players, assistant coaches and coaching rivals, the court was named in honor of the late Ben Moore on Nov. 13.

The holiday season is here and with it comes increasingly busy roadways. Thomas Nelson Police advise everyone to be mindful of actions that will make for safer road trips. Drivers can protect themselves and their passengers by taking a few simple precautions. Check out these tips: Make sure your vehicle is tuned up and in good condition for travel before heading out.  Use seat belts and child safety seats. The rear seat is the safest place for children to ride.

The world of online gaming has exploded in recent years, partly because of the pandemic. Tom Rockson and Jason Vance, co-advisers for the gaming club at Thomas Nelson Community College, are hoping to tap into that growth. “Gaming is such a universal interest for our students,” Rockson said. “All people seem to love games. Students, especially, are very into video games, very into online massive multi-player games, Dungeons & Dragons, card games like Magic: The Gathering, Pokemon cards.”

Happy Veterans Day! This is the day that we celebrate our veterans and those who currently serve our nation. Veterans Day is indeed amongst the most special occasions of each year. I write to share my appreciation for those faculty, staff and students that have served our country and proudly worn our nation’s uniform. As a veteran myself, I can certainly understand the sacrifice that each of you and your families have made to defend our country in times of war and protect it during times of peace.

College Board's Budget and Finance Committee Meets Nov. 18
