Thomas Nelson’s 93-80 victory over Carolina Christian on Feb. 5 did more than keep the Gators undefeated in the New South Athletic Conference. It clinched the top seed in the post-season tournament, giving the Gators (14-1 overall, 3-0 conference) a bye into the championship game, which is set for Feb. 26 at 6 p.m. at Bethel High School.

Thinking ahead to the 2022 Fall Semester, the online scholarship application for Camp Community College will open February 14 with a deadline of April 20 for all fall scholarships.
The application is at the Camp Community College website - https://www.pdc.edu/attend/paying-for-college/scholarships/. Current students, and those intending to enroll in the fall for the first time, can view the scholarships now to see what are the best options for them.
For those thinking about applying for the fall semester, scholarships are a good way to reduce the cost of attending college.

Mylira Green, a licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist, will deliver a simple message in her Feb. 25 virtual presentation for Thomas Nelson as part of Black History Month. “In order for you to be successful in any environment, you must first love yourself,” she said. Her presentation, scheduled to start at 1 p.m., is titled “Self-love for Mental Health.” Her goal is for those participating to “walk away loving themselves. It literally starts with you.” She wants people to learn what self-love looks like and how they can achieve it.

Geri Mathey had many aspirations early on but College was not on the radar. Born and raised in Japan, where her father worked as a civil servant at Army Camp Zama, she was doubtful about her aptitude in her teens. “I remember when I was in high school, I had no desire to go to college. I didn’t think I was smart enough, wise enough or intelligent enough to go to college ... many years later I popped in a seat and listened to somebody give a lecture on American literature,” said Mathey, administrative assistant to Thomas Nelson’s vice president of Finance and Administration.

Dr. Kris Rarig has been selected for Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society’s (PTK) Distinguished Administrator Award. Vice President of Student Affairs at Thomas Nelson now becoming Virginia Peninsula Community College, Rarig is among 28 college leaders from several states chosen for the prestigious honor. "It was a lovely and completely unexpected surprise! PTK is an outstanding organization and it’s been an honor and privilege to work with them," said Rarig. "To receive this as I am about to end my tenure at Thomas Nelson is particularly sweet."

Thomas Nelson Community College’s Local Board will meet at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16 at the Peninsula Workforce Development Center at 600 Butler Farm Rd. on the Hampton campus. Convening in rooms 1301-1303, the Board will discuss regular business. The Board will enter closed session to discuss honorary degrees or special awards in accordance with §2.2-3711(A)(11) of the Code of Virginia. General Board meetings are open to the public in accordance with the Virginia Freedom of Information Act.

The Thomas Nelson Community College Board’s Curriculum, Instruction, and Student Services Committee will meet at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 9 on the Hampton campus in room 717, Hampton III located at 525 Butler Farm Rd. The committee will discuss curriculum matters. On Thursday, Feb. 10, the Board’s Budget and Finance Committee will meet at 3 p.m. in Hampton III to discuss financial reports. The committee meetings are open to the public in accordance with the Virginia Freedom of Information Act.

Officials advice students, faculty and staff to be vigilant in ensuring a safe working and learning environment on our campuses. Tools for reporting incidents or suspicious behavior are available. The Report an Incident or Concern button located on our homepage allows confidential reporting of any incident. Close to 200 students participated in a pair of Student Welcome and Club Days, one at Thomas Nelson’s Historic Triangle campus, and the other at the Hampton campus. In Williamsburg on Jan. 24, almost 90 students showed up, according to Kadisia Archer, the College's Student Activities coordinator. The following day in Hampton, more than 100 students participated.

Undergoing a name change is more than doing research, holding focus groups, town halls and meeting after meeting. There are a lot of things that must be done behind the scenes. There, also, are a lot of unknowns. “None of us have ever done this before,” said Ada Badgley, the director of Strategic Initiatives for Thomas Nelson, which is becoming Virginia Peninsula Community College. “We've done branding and rebranding, but we’ve never changed a name.”

Super Saturday, a free financial aid workshop for college-bound and returning students, takes place Feb. 5 at Thomas Nelson (becoming Virginia Peninsula Community College). During the 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. event, the College's Financial Aid team will assist attendees in Hampton at Wythe Hall in the computer lab next to the library and at the Historic Triangle campus in Room 233. Representatives from Admissions, Academic Advising, and faculty from each division will also be on hand.
