Of three Faculty-Staff Innovators grants recently awarded, one went to the drone program.   Recipients of the latest Faculty-Staff Innovators grants from the Thomas Nelson Educational Foundation vary greatly. One involves an academic program, another involves a workforce development program, and the third involves a program that helps students transition to college life. However, what they all have in common is their enduring impact on student success, which is the grant program's goal, said Tracy Ashley, the College's director of development.

As the president of the Student Government Association at Thomas Nelson, Z. Cherry likes to stress the “student” aspect. “The goals that I have set are for the students, my peers,” said Cherry, who prefers to go by her first initial or last name. First and foremost among those goals is making her peers aware the SGA is for them; that if they “have any questions, comments or concerns, whether good, bad or ugly,” the organization is there for them.

Known as the “Amazing Ayisha” by her patients, Ayisha Muhammad is dedicated to caring for elderly and disabled clients as a certified nurse aide through her business, iCare4u, LLC. The 34-year-old mom of two decided to pursue a business degree at Tidewater Community College to expand her knowledge and gain the skills she needs to grow her business. Ayisha chose the college’s Accelerated Degree Program (ADP) to get her degree even faster. She started in Feb. 2021 and will cross the stage at TCC’s 73rd Commencement Exercises less than a year later on Dec.

Basketball Team Facing Ranked Opponents

The Thomas Nelson men’s basketball team is 7-0, and faces two nationally-ranked opponents this weekend, one on the road and one at home. The first game is Saturday, Dec. 18 against Sandhills Community College, which is in Pinehurst, N.C. Sandhills is 14-4 and ranked 10th  in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III poll. The Gators return home the following day to take on Monroe College (Bronx campus) in a 2 p.m. game at Hampton's Bethel High School. Monroe College is 8-2 and ranked two spots behind Sandhills.

Meet Presidential Ambassador Priya Patel

Priya Patel is among four students participating in the College’s Presidential Ambassador Program for 2021-2022. She serves as an ambassador at the Hampton campus. Students in the Presidential Ambassadors program commit to assist the College for 10 months by participating in events and working in various roles on campus. Geology Professor Pete Berquist started participating in search-and-rescue missions at Acadia National Park more than 15 years ago. Before joining Thomas Nelson’s faculty in 2007, Pete Berquist was a ranger at Acadia National Park in Maine for three years. He was also a visiting faculty member at a nearby college. “It kept me in geology and teaching, which is what I like doing,” he said. “It also allowed me to stay in kind of an outdoor-education realm, which is something I’ve always been interested in and engaged with.”
