Now is the time to Grow Your Future. Open registration for summer and fall 2022 classes at Camp Community College begins February 28. Students can get started by going to Camp’s website at www.pdc.edu/growmyfuture to connect with an advisor. G3 assistance is available for those entering Early Childhood Education, Healthcare, Information Technology, Public Safety, and Skilled Trades programs at Camp. Eligible students can enroll in these programs at little or no cost. Don't miss out this fall. Financial Aid is also available.

Black Women Hold Three Key Leadership Posts at College

Thomas Nelson psychology professor Shanda Jenkins, in discussing Black women in leadership positions in higher education, referenced an article by the Chronicle of Higher Education that asked who was missing. “We’re missing,” she said of Black women. A recent study of U.S. colleges by WomensPowerGap.org revealed just 5% of the 130 responding colleges have a Black woman president.

Women in Literature: Lisa Ray

Paid Summer Research Opportunity at VCU Open to Thomas Nelson Students

Motivated community college students interested in exploring research careers in the biomedical and behavioral sciences can take advantage of the Dream-to-Goal (DTG) Summer Research Program. The program will provide hands-on laboratory skills, provide research experience, and prepare students for success when they transfer to a four-year school. Participants will live on the Virginia Commonwealth University campus for eight weeks and then return for another eight-week session the following summer.

A long commute hasn't deterred Hezekiah Brown from playing basketball at Thomas Nelson. Hezekiah Brown, a first-year player on Thomas Nelson’s basketball team, said one of the biggest differences between the college and high school game is the dedication required at the former. “You have to stay dedicated,” he said, and he wasn’t just talking about basketball. “Keeping up the grades is a little harder because it's more on your own, whereas in high school, you got a lot more help for classes. That's probably the hardest part.”

Gators Clinch Berth in Conference Title Game

Thomas Nelson’s 93-80 victory over Carolina Christian on Feb. 5 did more than keep the Gators undefeated in the New South Athletic Conference. It clinched the top seed in the post-season tournament, giving the Gators (14-1 overall, 3-0 conference) a bye into the championship game, which is set for Feb. 26 at 6 p.m. at Bethel High School.

Black History Month Speaker to Discuss Self-Love

Mylira Green, a licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist, will deliver a simple message in her Feb. 25 virtual presentation for Thomas Nelson as part of Black History Month. “In order for you to be successful in any environment, you must first love yourself,” she said. Her presentation, scheduled to start at 1 p.m., is titled “Self-love for Mental Health.” Her goal is for those participating to “walk away loving themselves. It literally starts with you.” She wants people to learn what self-love looks like and how they can achieve it.

UVa Credential Makes Three Degrees for Mathey

Geri Mathey had many aspirations early on but College was not on the radar. Born and raised in Japan, where her father worked as a civil servant at Army Camp Zama, she was doubtful about her aptitude in her teens.  “I remember when I was in high school, I had no desire to go to college. I didn’t think I was smart enough, wise enough or intelligent enough to go to college ... many years later I popped in a seat and listened to somebody give a lecture on American literature,” said Mathey, administrative assistant to Thomas Nelson’s vice president of Finance and Administration.

Rarig Chosen for PTK's Distinguished Administrator Award

Dr. Kris Rarig has been selected for Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society’s (PTK) Distinguished Administrator Award. Vice President of Student Affairs at Thomas Nelson now becoming Virginia Peninsula Community College, Rarig is among 28 college leaders from several states chosen for the prestigious honor. "It was a lovely and completely unexpected surprise! PTK is an outstanding organization and it’s been an honor and privilege to work with them," said Rarig. "To receive this as I am about to end my tenure at Thomas Nelson is particularly sweet."
