From TCC to the Ellen Show to serving women and families

In the early days of the pandemic in 2020, Rickkita flew to Hollywood to appear on the Ellen Show. Not only did she get to meet Ellen DeGeneres, the star of the show, she received $10,000 for her family and another $10,000 for the charity she founded and now leads, Sisters Healing Sisters. “Meeting Ellen and being in the room with all of that energy was an amazing experience,” said Taylor, who graduated with an Associate of Science in Business Administration in 2013. Whitley Selected for All-USA Academic Team

Thomas Nelson’s Anastasia Whitley is among 20 college students named to the prestigious All-USA Academic Team and will receive a $5,000 scholarship. More than 2,200 students were nominated for the award. The team members will be recognized during the American Association of Community Colleges’ (AACC) convention in May. In addition to the scholarship funds, recipients will be presented with commemorative medallions, and their college presidents will receive commemorative obelisks.

Scholarships Benefit More Than Recipients

A scholarship has allowed Lauren Toney to pursue a career in dental hygiene. (Photo by Harry Washington) Winners of the nearly 200 scholarships offered each year by the Thomas Nelson Educational Foundation reap immediate rewards. What often is missed are the long-term effects of those scholarships. Stephanie Green is hoping her leadership degree leads to a job with the City of Hampton, working for a program that features inclusivity. Lauren Toney’s goal is to be a dental hygienist. Veronica Thomas wants to be a business manager at a doctor’s office.

Student Affairs Offices Closed May 16

Student Affairs will be closed Monday, May 16 allowing staff to prepare for the College’s 5 p.m. commencement ceremony. This includes Admissions & Enrollment Services, Academic Advising, TRiO, Disability Services, Great Expectations, Single Stop, Student Life & Activities, Testing Services, and Dual Enrollment. The offices will reopen Tuesday, May 17 with personnel reporting at 7:30 a.m. and services beginning at 8 a.m. During the closure, some services such as registration will be available online.

ChefsGO Graduate Driven to Succeed

Thomas Nelson President Dr. Towuanna Porter Brannon and Gregory Whitfield were all smiles at the 2022 ChefsGO graduation in February. Gregory Whitfield says cooking is about the only thing he knows how to do. Ever since he was small, it has interested him. Nearly all of his jobs have been in the restaurant or fast-food industries.

Summer Work & Operations Schedule Begins May 16

The summer work schedule of four nine-hour days Monday through Thursday and four hours Friday runs May 16 through Aug. 5. New this year are virtual Fridays.  The College will be closed on May 30 for Memorial Day, June 20 for Juneteenth, and July 4 in observance of Independence Day. Office hours will be adjusted during the weeks in which these holidays are observed. Summer  WORK SCHEDULE for full-time personnel, unless otherwise approved:

College Board Committee Meetings Upcoming

The Thomas Nelson Community College Board’s Curriculum, Instruction and Student Services committee will meet at 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 13 at the Hampton campus in room 717, Hampton III located at 525 Butler Farm Rd. The committee will discuss curriculum matters. The following day at 9 a.m., the Board’s Budget and Finance committee will meet  in room 717, Hampton III to discuss financial matters.   The committee meetings are open to the public in accordance with the Virginia Freedom of Information Act.

TCC Theatre presents Shakespeare’s “The Merchant of Venice,” April 8-16

College's PTK Chapter Repeats Success

(Photo courtesy of Valerie Burge-Hall) Thomas Nelson’s chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society faced many challenges the past year. One of those was a positive challenge: trying to continue a run of excellence. That challenge was met, as the College earned six awards at the recent regional conference, including receiving prestigious 5-star status.

Romero Named Keynote Speaker for May 16 Graduation

Dr. Jonathan Romero, a Thomas Nelson College Board member and alumnus, has been selected as the keynote speaker for the College’s 53rd Commencement Exercises. Romero, a clinical assistant professor in Old Dominion University’s School of Nursing, graduated from Thomas Nelson in May 2011. He also has degrees from Fort Hays State University, Walden University, and Regis College. Before joining ODU’s faculty, he was at Hampton University for almost four years. In addition, he’s a certified surgical assistant/registered nurse.

Nick Martins moving on to GMU

One of Camp Community College’s top starting pitchers will be moving on to bigger things after this season. Nick Martins, a crafty right-hander, has accepted a scholarship from George Mason University to continue his collegiate career and grace the ball field in Fairfax. Martins is the first Camp player under head coach Daniel Rollins to receive scholarship money from a Division I college program. Martins recently demonstrated why the George Mason program was interested in him. On March 5, he pitched seven shutout innings at Repair Tech Field against Brunswick Community College.

Women in Leadership: Mary Bunting

Mary Bunting is doing what she loves in a place she loves. For the city she calls home it’s significant. She became Hampton city manager in 2009 and is the first woman to hold the position since the city established the job in the1950s. “I love doing the work. It’s even more special when you can help to make the community that raised you even stronger and better for the next generation,” she said, noting it’s rare for those in her position to serve in their hometown.  While some may consider her a trailblazer, Bunting sees it differently.

The more than 40 people on hand March 21 at a Newport News hotel heard firsthand from those students how appreciative they were.

Be part of something special by supporting the Care Team as it prepares to present its spring Pop-Up Clothes Closet.  Everyone can participate by donating clean, gently-used clothing suitable for men, women and children. Donations of jackets, suits, professional attire, backpacks, lunch bags, toiletries, accessories, children’s books and more are welcome.
